About Us
Southern Pines Horse Trials, March 12 - 14, 2004

Sunday, March 14th, Show Jumping

Nathalie Bouckaert, of Chatsworth, GA, rode the 10 year old gelding, West Farthing, owned by her father, to a double clear Show Jumping round to retain their first place finish in the Advanced "D" Section at the Southern Pines Horse Trials. West Farthing was the only Advanced horse at Southern Pines to finish on his Dressage score of 36.7.

Nathalie said, "The Show Jumping time was pretty tight. (Six out of the eleven horses who Show Jumped in that Section had time faults,) He has a really big stride. I didn't have to push him anywhere. I expect him to be grown up and he's not really. We bought him in England. He had done two CCI**'s and one Advanced Horse Trial." (Nathalie and West Farthing are pictured at right in the Show Jumping Phase.)

Kim Severson retained second place with Plain Dealing Farm's He's Got Rhythm, though this pair incurred 2 time faults, while jumping clean, for a final score of 43.3. (Kim and He's Got Rhythm are pictured below left in the Show Jumping Phase.

Corinne Ashton and Dobbin remained in 3rd place. Though they did have one rail down for 4 faults and a final score of 52.1, they were able to stay 2.6 faults ahead of Heidi White and Northern Spy, who were the only entrants, besides Nathalie and West Farthing, to manage a double clear Show Jumping round.

Amy Tryon won both the Advanced C-1 Section, with My Beau, and the Advanced C-2 Section, with Poggio II. No one jumped clean in the C-1 Section, so My Beau's 12 fault round was still good enough to retain first place on a score of 51.6.

Nina Fout rode her Sydney Olympic Games Bronze Medal Team mount and multiple time top 20 Badminton CCI**** finisher, 3 Magic Beans, to 2nd place in the C-1 Section with 2 rails down for 68.1. Eleanor Brennan and Bailey II finished 3rd with four rails down for 69.2.

Poggio II did jump a double clear in the stadium to retain his overnight lead on 47.8. (eventingetc.com incorrectly reported, on Saturday night, that Holly Hepp and Damien were in first place after Cross Country. That score had been posted before the end of the appeal time. Amy was able to appeal the number of time faults originally given to Poggio II and get them reduced to 10.8, which put her in first place by 2.2 faults - apologies to both Amy and Holly.)

Holly and Damien, (actually 2nd after Cross Country) added 4 jumping faults and one time fault in the Show Jumping for a final score of 55.0, and 2nd place. Mark Weissbecker riding Swayne finished 3rd, with no rails down and just 2 time faults for 55.2.

Stephen Bradley, of Leesburg, VA, who represented the USET at the Barcelona Olympic Games, in 1992, and who was a member of the USET's Gold Medal Pan American Games Team last fall, won both Open Intermediate Sections. Steve's Pan Am horse, Brandenburg's Joshua won OI/2 on a score of 39.9, while From won the OI/1 Section on 50.3. Both horses were making their 2004 competitive debuts at Southern Pines. (Steve and Brandenburg's Joshua are pictured at right jumping out of the water, on Cross Country.)

Brandenburg's Joshua Show Jumped double clear as did the second place finisher in OI/2, Nathalie Bouckaert riding, Everest, who finished on his Dressage Score of 41.0. Everest and West Farthing gave Nathalie the only two horses of the Advanced and the OI Sections at Southern Pines to finish on their Dressage scores.

Gina Fiori and Enniskerry Imp dropped from first place in OI/1 after Cross Country to second behind Steve with two fences down and one time fault in the final phase, while Steve and From managed only one rail down for 4 faults.

8:30 AM, Monday, March 15th: Since Red Hills has fallen on its face as far as results go, eventingetc.com can report the following:

There was some sort of scoring mix up, which apparently makes even what does appear on their web site, re: Dressage results, inaccurate.

Your intrepid reporter stood with Holly Hepp in the stable area at Southern Pines, on Sunday morning, as she talked with Phillip Dutton on her cell phone. There was the following news:

Prior to SJ, Darren and Windfall were in 1st place, probably with one fence in hand. Phillip was 2nd, 4th and 6th. Heather Morris was 3rd and Jan Thompson was 5th.

Many thanks to Holly, Heidi White and Phillip for this update.

Southern Pines results are up on their web site (and accurate). eventinetc.com's report, with pictures follows ASAP.

Saturday, March 13, Cross Country Day

Wonderful Southern Pines Cross Country weather - temperatures in the mid 50's and nearly perfect going, greeted the three Advanced sections, which began at 11:30 AM, Saturday. Admittedly, it was a bit chilly and breezy at 9:00 AM for the first of the OI's; however, conditions improved rapidly on a lovely spring day.

Nathalie Bouckaert, of Chatsworth, GA set the tone in the Advanced "D" Section by turning in the only double clear of the Advanced competition with West Farthing. This pair stood 6th after the Dressage phase and their faultless and swift ride moved them right to the lead. (Nathalie and West Farthing are pictured at right jumping into the water.)

The overnight leaders, John Williams and his World Equestrian Games Team Gold Medal mount Carrick did not run. John had never intended for either Carrick or Sloopy to run Cross Country at Southern Pines - they were entered to compete in Dressage and Show Jumping as part of their preparation for Rolex-Kentucky.

John's Gold Medal Team partner Kim Severson, of Scottsvile, VA, moved from 3rd to second riding the chestnut gelding He's Got Rhythm, who is owned by Linda Wachmeister's Plain Dealing Farm. Their 8.8 time faults for 22 seconds over the time allowed was the third fastest time of the section, and gave them a score of 41.3, which moved them well ahead of Corinne Ashton and Dobbin (48.07), who picked up 16.4 time faults for 41 seconds over the time allowed. Kim did not run Winsome Adante, who had placed 4th in the Dressage.

Will Faudree, of Southern Pines, rode his Pan American Gold Medal team mount Antigua to 4th place with 11.2 time faults for a final score of 49.12.

Amy Tryon, John and Kim's Jerez, Spain WEG Gold Medal teammate led the Advanced C/2 Section with My Beau. My Beau added 5.2 time faults to his second place Dressage score of 34.35 for a two day total of 39.55. Amy has come east early this year for Winter Training with Captain Mark Phillips and to prepare for Rolex-Kentucky. She is currently based at Foxhall Farm in Georgia. (Amy and My Beau are pictured at left jumping the "skinny" after the water.)

The Dressage leader, Michael Pollard had a 20 fault glance off with Royal Bart to drop out of contention.

Eleanor Brennan and Bailey stand in second place on the C/2 Section, on 53.17, having added only 3.6 time faults to their 15th place Dressage score of 49.57.

Bobby Costello, who lives in Southern Pines, rode his 2003 Pan American Gold Medal Team mount Dalliance to 3rd place, picking up 16 time faults for a two day score of 56.87. Nina Fout, a member of the 2000 Olympic Bronze Medal Team at the Sydney Olympic Games, is in 4th position on a score of 60.03, having accrued 19.6 time faults.

Gayle Molander, who had captured an Advanced Section at Pine Top last weekend, suffered a crashing fall with the mare I Love Lucy. The mare got right up and galloped off; however, Gayle was very slow to get up and was attended to by Medics on the course. After an 11 minute hold on course, Gayle was able to stand and walk to the emergency vehicle, which was happy news.

"It was the first time the horse and I really clicked. He was adjustable and rideable," said Holly Hepp of her 10.8 time fault ride with Mrs. Roger Secrist's Damien, who leads Advanced Section C/2 on a score of 49.93. Holly and Damien had been tied for 4th after Dressage. (Holly and Damien are pictured at right jumping into the water.)

Yvonne Lucas and Car Tanga and Mollie Zobel and Mazarati, who had been tied for first after Dressage both retired on course.

Mark Weissbecker, and Swayne, who were hard done by in the Dressage phase - 7th on a score of 40.00 - for one of the best movers and most accurate in the Section - added a 13.2 time faults, for a two day score of 53.2 and second place.

Jenna Schildmier rode Tumble Dry to third place on 16.0 time faults for 55.13, while Pam Wiedemann and Bert and I landed in fourth place with a score of 60.03, which included 19.6 time faults.

Gina Fiori riding Enniskerry Imp (43.0) and Stephen Bradley, with his Pan Am Games Team Gold Medal mount Brandenburg's Joshua (38.9), lead the two sections of OI.

Ginny Brysen and Kestrelare are in first place in the Y/OI.

Gillian Clissold and Sportscar, everyones' favorite amateur combination, came to a parting of the ways jumping into the water, on Saturday. No harm was done except for a thorough soaking for Gillian.

Southern Pines Preview

In spite of the lure of Eventing World Cup qualifying and the $10,000 prize money offered in the CIC -W*** at Red Hills, in Tallahassee, FL, the majority of Olympic hopefuls have chosen to compete at Southern Pines this weekend.

Three of the four members of the 2003 World Championship Gold Medal Team from Jerez, Spain, 2002, will run at Southern Pines. Kim Severson has entered five horses in the Advanced, including her Gold Medal mount Winsome Adante. John Williams plans on taking two, including his Gold Medal mount, Carrick, most recently fourth at the Burghley CCI****. Amy Tryon will have two in North Carolina, Poggio II and My Beau. The only defector is David O'Connor, who is taking three horses to Tallahassee for the CIC-W***.

Likewise, three of the four members of the USET's Pan American Games Gold Medal Team will compete at Southern Pines. Will Faudree has entered Antigua. Bobby Costello will run Dalliance and Stephen Bradley will make his 2004 competition debut at the Carolina Horse Park with Brandenburg's Joshua and From in the OI. Jan Thompson, the only defector heads to Red Hills.

Twice World Champion, Bruce Davidson has entered his 2003 Burghley CCI**** sixth place finisher, Little Tricky at Southern Pines. (Bruce and Little Tricky are pictured at right, jumping into the water at Burghley, 2003.) Nina Fout, a member of the USET's Bronze Medal Team from the 2000 Olympic Games, will have 3 Magic Beans, her Olympic ride, in North Carolina.

Australia's Phillip Dutton will defend his CIC-W*** title at Tallahassee with Nova Top. Darren Chiacchia and Karen O'Connor, Gold and Silver Individual Medalists at the Pan American Games, will be among the challengers.

In spite of the modern wonders of 2004, it is still impossible to be in two places at once. www.eventingetc.com will be following the stars to Southern Pines. An endeavor will be made to keep readers up to date on Red Hills as we photograph and report daily on Southern Pines.
