Friday, September 17th - The Second Day of Dressage

The outer bands of Hurricane Ivan disrupted the upper levels of Dressage as well as the lower level Cross Country; but, only for short periods on Friday. Organizer par excellence Lefreda Williams apparently has a straight wire to the Weather Gods, for she came on the loud speaker to say that there were two narrow bands of rain containing thunder storms that would be passing over the Carolina Horse Park and that competition would be stopped for safety's sake during each. Sure enough!- that's exactly what happened. Neither storm lasted longer than 20 minutes.

There was, however, one slight glitch - the Advanced Dressage kept running right through the second storm. The drenching downpour, which dropped visibility to about 100 yards, did nothing to deter Kim Severson, she of the Individual Silver Medal at the Athens Olympic Games, and the come back horse of this young fall season, Royal Venture. Their score of 24.78 leads the Advanced Championship by 1.31 faults.

Michael Pollard, of Chatsworth, GA, and SS Jett were the other pair "fortunate" enough to get their tail coats washed for free. They came up with a score of 30.87, good for seventh place, just 6.09 faults out of the lead.

Squeezed in between these two water lovers are Karen O'Connor and Joker's Wild on 26.09 for second position and Karen O'Connor again, this time riding Grand Slam to a score of 26.31, and third position. (Karen and Grand Slam are pictured above at the left)

Bonnie Mosser and Jenga, fresh from a big win at the Over The Walls CIC-W***, which will take her to the Eventing World Cup in Pau, France, is in fourth place on a score of 28.48, tied with Tiffany Loudon and Above 'N Beyond, third at the Foxhall Cup CCI***, this spring. (Bonnie Mosser and Jenga are pictured at the right.)

These two competitors are just ahead of Nathalie Bouckaert and West Farthing, second at Over The Walls, and most recently winners at the Kentucky Classic CIC**, who were the sixth pairing to squeeze into the 20's with 29.57.
