Top Foreign Event Riders Injured

From the March 17th issue of Horse & Hound:

"Eventing World Champion and Olympic team Gold medalist Jean Teulere has been sidelined for two months after an accident while cross-country schooling a fortnight ago at Verrie, a schooling and competition venue in France. The Frenchman broke his pelvis and fractured a Vertebra when the horse rolled on him after a fall at a coffin combination."

"Australia's Shane Rose, the popular winner of last season's the Adelaide CCI****, has suffered multiple facial fractures after being kicked by a horse writes Alison Duthie.

"Shane was long reining a young racehorse through some starting stalls at his property, in Werombi, NSW, when the horse lashed out, kicking him in the face. He was knocked unconscious for a few seconds and was rushed to a nearby hospital by fellow event rider Blair Richardson, who witnessed the accident. Shane was put into a medically induced coma to stabilise him and control his swelling.

"During the first week he underwent three operations, including a tracheotomy and some facial reconstruction. He regained consciousness at the end of last week, but was unable to speak due to the tracheotomy and his eyes were so swollen he couldn't see.

"However, his partner Niki Chapman said, "Shane is very alert and answers questions with a nod."

"Shane will be in hospital for some time yet as the painstaking job of facial reconstruction continues."
