Cochran has been a member of the eventing community for years, primarily as
a groom for former international competitor Abigail Lufkin, but also as a competitor
on her beloved mount, Lighter Than Air. Liz is now battling cancer,
and a treatment she desperately needs has been disallowed by her insurance company.
To help defray costs, her friends are banding together to raise money--a portion
of the proceeds from this clinic will go to help Liz. (Liz and Lighter Than
Air are pictured at the right at the Radnor CCI, in 2003, where they placed third
in the Preliminary Section.) For
more information on Sharon and her program and facility, you can go to www.lastfrontierfarm.com.
For more information on the clinic, please contact Scott Farrell as listed above.
If you cannot attend the clinic, but would like to donate to Liz's cause, please
contact Po Tatham at 540-687-6846. This
is a great cause, and should be a great, educational weekend. Editor's
Note: Below is a letter from Abigail Lufkin re: supporting Liz. Thank
you all in advance for taking the time to read this.
As most of you know, Liz has been my friend for 20 years and worked with me for
12 of those. As the note below explains, she discovered 8 months ago, suddenly
and completely out of the blue, that she has extensive colon cancer.
After seeing a number of specialists, it was determined that Liz's one, most promising
opportunity for a cure lay in a rigorous operation, one which is on the cutting
edge of cancer research. At present, her insurance company is refusing to pay
for any of the surgery. Even
if we are successful with a suit against the company, they will only cover 70%
of Liz's medical costs. According to a doctor I know who is familiar with such
cases, instances like this frequently bankrupt young couples like Liz and Tom.
But
for the grace of fate, you, I, or someone we love could be in Liz's position.
It is not often in our lives that we are given the opportunity to do something
great. I hope that you will choose action today and give whatever you are able,
to help a remarkable person survive through a horrendous time. "We
make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give."
Sir Winston Churchill British politician (1874 - 1965)
