Blenheim Petplan European Championships, Sept 7 - 11, 2005

Friday, Sept 9 - the Second Day of Dressage

Germany takes a strong lead

The Germany team maintained their lead throughout the dressage and currently stand at the head of the leaderboard at The FEI Blenheim Petplan European Eventing Championships.

Current individual leader and German team member Bettina Hoy’s high score brought the team well in front at the midway stage yesterday. After fourth team member Frank Ostholt and Air Jordan (Number 64) produced a test of 38 penalties this afternoon, to bring him into an individual ranking of equal third, the gap to second placed team GB widened. As Frank left the arena a large contingent of German supporters voiced their support. With three German team riders in the top ten their position after dressage looked unassailable. Fourth British team members Leslie Law and Shear L’Eau had the impossible task of having to produce a world record test in order to penetrate the German stronghold. Leslie played safe with a solid, steady test to gain a good mark of 42.6 bringing him into 11th place.

While France has four riders in the top 14 and two team members in the top seven, Nicolas Touzaint, the reigning European champion, and third highest team member to count had an unsettled test and is down in 24th place.

Going into cross-country tomorrow the German team stand on 111.7, 12 penalties ahead of the British team on 123.9. The Brits are marginally ahead of the French who have a team score of 131.1.

“It’s a great cross-country course out there,” said Bettina Hoy, “And typical of Mike Etherington-Smith – plenty of challenges and lots to think about.”

Zara Phillips and Toytown, who are making their team debut, are the highest placed British team members in third place although British individual Pippa Funnell remained in second place with Ensign. (Zara and Toytown are pictured at the left. Photo courtesy of the Blenheim Petplan European Championships.)

After such a good dressage test there are plenty with expectations that Zara could emulate her other – The Princess Royal who was European champion in 1971. “So everyone keeps reminding me,” said Zara, “But there is still a long way to go.”
