Land Rover Burghley CCI****, Aug 31 - Sept 4, 2005

Friday, Sept 2nd - the Second Day of Dressage

ALL CHANGE AT THE TOP OF THE LEADERBOARD

At the eleventh hour British rider William Fox-Pitt brought two days of dressage to an end by snatching the lead in The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. (William and Ballincoola are pictured at the right below. Photo Courtesy of the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.)

Despite high temperatures, William and Ballincoola (no 76) kept their cool to go ahead of the leading American combination of Kim Severson and the British bred Winsome Adante; but, by just 0.4 of a penalty. (Kim and Winsome Adante are pictured at the left below at Rolex-Kentucky last spring.) New Zealander Andrew Nicholson and Lord Killinghurst who, came close last year, took third place.

Ballincoola who was withdrawn from Badminton (on the Steeplechase) in the spring after a heart fibrillation, won at Barbury CIC*** last month and was fourth in the World Cup final at Malmo two weeks ago. “His problem at Badminton was just one of those things and he has been fine ever since,” said William, who two weeks ago became a father for the first time. “He was as good today in his dressage as he has ever been as he can be a ‘bit chestnut’ and fractious. It is a tricky test – it all comes thick and fast – and I am sure he has more to come once he relaxes a bit more”.

William has a hectic schedule over the weekend as he travelled home to Dorset to ride Tamarillo, who he rides next week on the British team. (At the Eoropean Championships at Blenheim). “It means more work; but, it is the best arrangement for him as coming here would not help him at this stage, although he was a bit surprised at show jumping in the dark last night and galloping just 10 hours later in the mist and before breakfast.”

While Kim has entered Winsome Adante for Burghley on three previous occasions this is the first time they have made it – although the pair won Blenheim in 2000. They have since won the Rolex Kentucky four star on three occasions. “He is proven over long and short format, although there is a lot of jumping out there tomorrow.”

Phillip Dutton stand 13th with Mrs. Annie Jones' The Foreman, 10.7 faults out of first place and 29th riding August Vettorino's Amazing Odyssey.

Buck Davidson is 45th with Luke Allen's Private Treaty (69.1), 27 faults adrift of the British leader, while Imtiaz Anees (IND) is just .5 of a fault behind Buck on a score of 69.6.

Emma Winter completes the roster of North American residents competing at Burghley. She stands in 60th place with Mahogany Chief (79.1).

Sally Futh send news from Burghley:

Capt. Mark Phillips, the course designer said that one had to be up on the clock at the 9 minute marker because ther would be no chance of making up time thereafter.

William Fox-Pitt, the Dressage leader, commented that there were a lot of issues near the end of the course.

Kim Severson, second after Dressage, said that at first she thought the XC course was, "... huge and not doable!" She said there was a lot to do and a lot of questions asked. "You'll just have to come up with the right answers and hopefully we'll do that."

News on Late Withdrawal of Two For Joy, Placed 18th After Dressage:

JACKSON JUMPS FOR JOY

Bournston Development Ltd’s Two For Joy (no 71) has been withdrawn from The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. (Polly and Two for Joy are pictured at the right at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials last spring.)

Two For Joy, ridden by Polly Jackson, has been withdrawn (from Burghley) as he has now been brought into the British squad for the FEI Blenheim Petplan European Championships (8-11 September) following the withdrawal of Marie-Louise Thomas and The Psephologist, due to minor injury.

The combination of Marie-Louise and The Psephologist had their final canter in preparation for the Championships this morning and the horse was not 100% sound after recovery.
