September 4 - Show Jumping Day
The
latest on Kim Severson: The following is from Sally Futh, whose husband owns Ashdale
David's Way:
"It could have been worse; he
(Winsome Adante) breasted the log at the far top of Capability's Cutting; Kim
went over onto her shoulder, in slow motion. "Dan" went over and kerflopped
- fortunately beside her. They airlifted her to hospital to check for a possible
shoulder injury, but, (her injuries are) not life threatening.".

WILLIAM
IS THE WINNER
British rider William Fox-Pitt maintained the
lead he set on Friday to win The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials from start to
finish with Ballincoola. It is the third win at the Lincolnshire
event
for the British Olympic team silver medallist. It was the first four star win
for Ballincoola, an 11 year old British bred gelding by Highland King owned by
Judith Skinner and Michael Payne long standing owners in the sport. (William
and Ballincoola are pictured at the right. Photo courtesy of Land Rover Burghley

An influential show jumping test meant a competition
that went right to the wire. Clear rounds were few and far between over Di Boddys
course there were just three clears throughout the day.
The
Australian combination of Philip Dutton and The Foreman, second at Lexington
this year, put the pressure on the top four with a superb clear round. The nine
year old American-bred
Thoroughbred
never looked like rolling a pole. (Phillip and TheForeman are pictured at the
left on the Burghley Cross Country Saturday. Photo courtesy of Land Rover Burghley
CCI****.)After Andrew Nicholson and Lord Killinghurst dropped three
poles pressure was mounting on William, even though he had two fences in-hand,
to stay at the top.
William and Ballincoola used their
lives and William knew they had to jump the last set of planks clear.
A full house of spectators held their breath, with a loud sigh of relief giving
rise to huge cheers to herald the popular British win. I just thought those
last planks have got to stay up and thank goodness they did, said
William as he held aloft the new Land Rover silver trophy.
Philip
and The Foreman, the only combination to finish on their dressage score finished
in second place with Andrew and Lord Killinghurst, yet again so near yet
so far, having to accept third place as last year.
Mary
King added four penalties; bu, it was good enough to lift her and Call Again
Cavalier three places to finish in fourth place, although Mary was probably
still rueing her seven time penalties on yesterdays steeplechase, without
which she would have been second.
The
charming little dun, Done To Order and Piggy French received a huge round
of applause when they achieved the first clear of the day to put them up 11 places
in the final standing.
Although he had one time fault, a clear
round over the coloured poles was enough to lift Harry Meade and the 15
year old Midnight Dazzler, by Catherston Dazzler, several places to receive the
prize for the best first timer at Burghley as well as the best under 25.

YOUNG RIDERS MAKE THEIR MARK
Harry Meades horse box will be going home fuller than it when it
arrived, with the addition of several prizes for winning the best first
timer and best under 25 award at The Land Rover Burghley Horse
Trials.
With Richard and Carolyn Lissacks homebred Midnight
Dazzler, 24th after cross country, rode one of few clear rounds over the show
jumps, albeit with one time penalty, to rise 11 places finishing in 13th place.
Hes not the most consistent horse and we came
here simply to do the best we could, said Harry. He produced
the best dressage test hes done in his life, jumped all the direct routes
yesterday and a clear round today what more could I have asked for
he has given me a great ride.
Having just left Bristol
University with a 2.1 degree in History of Art, during which time he was apprentice
to Burghley winner William Fox-Pitt, Harry has now decided to be
a full-time rider.
So I will be looking for some more rides, said
Wiltshire based Harry, whose father Richard, who won here in 1964
on Barberry, was on hand for advice over the weekend. He simply told me
to ride as I normally do.
Twenty year old Chloe Newton
won the prize for the highest placed youngest rider. Chloe, from
Melton Mowbray, who finished in 23rd place with Drop Dead Gorgeous, also rode
the highest place mare just one of two to finish the other being Goulton
Storm ridden by Carole Dennis.

LAST LEAP AT BURGHLEY
British rider Tristram Owers unintentionally wrote
himself into the history books at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. As the
last rider to go today he and Classic Touch have the honour of being the last
combination to jump the last four star steeplechase fence in the history of the
sport in the UK.
