Advanced
Sections "A" and "B"
Every
North American resident entered for The Burghley CCI****, in Stamford, England,
with the exception of Amy Barrington, used the Millbrook Horse Trials, in New
York State, as their final run prior to the great British four star.
Tremain
Cooper's Cross Country course contained many of the questions that may be asked
at Burghley, if in a slightly smaller and perhaps less technical manner. This
added to the excellent organization at Millbrook made it no surprise that it is
such a popular competition.
The
results of those headed to Burghley were as follows:

In Section "A", which had 30 starters, Kim Severson with Plain
Dealing Farm's Winsome Adante, the reigning Rolex-Kentucky champion, placed first.
To no one's surprise, "Dan" won the Dressage on a score of 26.5. The
pair dropped to second when they picked up 8.8 time faults on Cross Country for
22 seconds over the Optimum Time. They returned to the winning slot with 4 faults
in Show Jumping for a final score of 39.3. (Kim and Winsome Adante are pictured
above right jumping onto the island in the Perrier Water Jump.)
Kristin
Schmolze riding Cavaldi had held the lead after Cross Country in Section "A";
however, a jump crew's delight performance, which accrued 18 faults in
the Show Jumping, dropped them to 11th place on a score of 51.7.
Others
headed to England from the "A" Section were Buck Davidson with
Luke Allen's Private Treaty and Australia's Phillip Dutton, who rode Mrs.
Annie Jones' The Foreman, last fall's Fair Hill International CCI*** winner. Buck,
who appears on the cover of this year's Millbrook Horse Trials Program with Private
Treaty as winners of one of the 2004 Advanced Sections, finished fifth in the
"A" Section on a score of 43.7. This score included fourth after Dressage
(31.3); ninth after Cross Country (12.4 time faults - 46.1); and double clear
Show Jumping for a final score of 43.7. (Buck and Private Treaty are pictured
at the left above jumping the fence on the island in the PerrierWater Jump.)

Phillip and The Foreman were eleventh after Dressage (36.5); stayed eleventh
after a 9.6 time fault Cross Country (46.1); and rose to eighth on a double clear
Show Jumping round for a final score of 46.1. (Phillip and The Foreman are
pictured at the right jumping into the Perrier Water Jump.)
In
Section "B", which had 29 starters, Phillip Dutton
and Amazing Odyssey, in third place, were the highest placed pair of those Burghley
Bound. They were twelfth after the Dressage Phase (36.5); rose to seventh on a
4.8 time fault Cross Country (43.9); and had a final placing of third, with a
double clear Show Jumping for a score of 43.9.
India's
Imtiaz Anees, who resides in Georgia, rode Freetown. Imtiaz, who finished
the Three Day Event at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia,
placed
eleventh after Dressage (38.3); moved up to ninth after Cross Country (7.2 time
faults - 45.5); and had one rail in the Show Jumping (4 faults) for a final score
of 49.5 and 8th place. (Imtiaz and Freetown are pictured at the left jumping
the fence on the island at the Perrier Water Jump.)
Meanwhile,
those not heading abroad finished as follows:
In
the "A" Section, Wendy Lewis and Galway Blazer were a mere .5
of a fault behind Kim and Winsome Adante, to finish in second place on
39.8 and Bonnie Mosser and Jenga, fresh from a 23rd place finish
at the Luhmuhlen CCI****, in Germany, placed third on 4.8. Both Wendy and
Bonnie had double clear Show Jumping rounds. (Wendy and Galway Blazer
are pictured at the right in the Perrier Water Jump)
The
"B" Section was won by the ubiquitous Aussie, Phillip Dutton, this
time riding Hannigan. These two finished on their Dressage score of 28.7
having scored double clears both Cross Country and Show Jumping.
Emilee
Libby rose from a tie for fifth place to second with Cahir on the strength
of a double clear Show Jumping round.
As
noted above, Phillip also placed third in the "B" Section with
Amazing Odyssey. (Phillip and Amazing Odyssey are pictured at the left below
jumping off the island in the Perrier Water Jump.)

Editor's
Note: The Millbrook Horse Trials are run for the benefit of the Dutchess Land
Conservancy, a not for profit land conservation organization.
Richard
A. Kimball, Jr., Chairman of the Board of the Duchess Land Conservancy wrote,
in part, "The Open land necessary for equestrian activities, including horse
trials, that have long been important to our area, is rapidly vanishing.
"All
of us, who are lucky enough to live in this area, cherish it for its rural qualities:
its active farmland, wildlife habitats, clean air and water, beautiful scenic
vistas - its sense of place. We have a precious opportunity to keep our
agricultural land open and farmed, our waterways clean, and our forestland intact
for wildlife and recreation."
The
relationship between Horse Trials and Land Conservancy is a natural one. Organizers
in other parts of the country would be well advised to consider the example of
the Millbrook Horse Trials and run their competitions for the benefit of their
nearby Land Conservancy organization.
