2005 USEA/Spalding Labs Young Event Horse Series Championships

Some of the best young event horses in the nation made their way to Leesburg, Virginia for the 2005 USEA/Spalding Labs Young Event Horse Series Championships, held September 30 in conjunction with the Morven Park CCI* and Advanced Horse Trials.

Thirty-two horses, from as far as Idaho, competed for top honors and prizes from Spalding Labs, Stackhouse Saddles, and Fleeceworks. Jungle Tale, ridden by Donna Smith, won the four-year-old division on a score of 85.6. The gray Irish Sport Horse is by Cougar out of Winter’s Tale, and owned by Jacqueline Badger Mars, of The Plains, Virginia. (Jungle Tale, ridden by Donna Smith, is pictured at the right receiving their trophy from Jo Whitehouse.)

Close on their heels was reserve champion Folk Lore, ridden by Allison Springer. The bay Hanoverian gelding is by Feiner Stern out of Vast N Bright (Thoroughbred), and owned by Kaiti Saunders, of Falls Church, Virginia.

Free and Clear, ridden by Phillip Dutton, took top honors in the five-year-old division on a score of 85.3. The bay Irish Sport Horse gelding, by Mountain Pearl out of Rare One (Thoroughbred), is owned by Colleen Hofstetter, of Mars, Pennsylvania. (Phillip and Free And Clear are pictured at the left below.) Orujo de la Galerna took the reserve champion position with a score of 84.8. The bay Thoroughbred stallion, by Agamenon and out of Cartelera, is owned and ridden by Pedro Gutierrez, of Mexico.

The Series follows somewhat after the Irish model, with classes designed specifically to showcase the potential of four- and five-year-old event horses, giving breeders and owners a stage to promote their youngsters’ talents among fields of their peers.

Classes were held throughout the year at 21 horse trials around the country that offered qualifying divisions. Horses that received scores of 70 or higher (out of 100) at one event qualified for the Championships. Winners in each division at each of the qualifying competitions received Fleeceworks complete saddle pad packages and certificates for six-month supplies of fly predators from Spalding Labs. A Stackhouse saddle and Spalding Labs certificate were awarded to the 2005 Champions.
