About Us
Barbaro, the Unbeaten Kentucky Derby Winner,
At New Bolton

What We Can Do to Help New Bolton, An Editorial

The tragedy that struck Mr. and Mrs. Roy Jackson's Barbaro, the Kentucky Derby winner, at the start of the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, on Saturday, May 20th, has involved racing fans of all ages, all over the United States.

The fracture of three bones in Barbaro's right hind leg and his subsequent trip, by van, to the New Bolton Center, (School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania) in Chester County, Pennsylvania, where he was operated on by Dr. Dean Richardson, have been covered in excrutiating detail by all branchs of the media. The facts that Barbero's trainer Michael Matz is an Olympic Gold Medalist in Show Jumping, and that he saved three children from a burning airplane after a crash, add to an incredible story.

The posters at the gates to New Bolton tell more about Barbero and his fans than any mere words can convey.

eventingetc pays homage to New Bolton and to the veterinarians, interns and nurses responsible for Barbero's care. We pray every day for Barbero's comfort and welfare and we hope you do as well.

Ways of Giving

For your convenience, gifts to the School may be made in several ways:

Online Giving: By making a gift with your credit card through a secure online transaction.

Give By Mail: By sending your check, made payable to the "Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania," to:

Office of Development and Alumni Relations
University of Pennsylvania
School of Veterinary Medicine
3800 Spruce Street
Philadelphia, PA 19104-6047

Matching Gifts: Matching gifts can double or even triple your gift to the School! If you have already made a gift or are about to make one, please visit the University of Pennsylvania Matching Gifts Database to see if your and/or your spouse's employer has a corporate matching gift program. If you don't find a listing, please contact your human resources department. Don't forget, too, that many employers will match the gifts of their nonemployee directors, retired employees, and the spouses, widows, or widowers of retired employees.

Outright Gifts: Owners of appreciated assets can obtain substantial tax benefits by transferring those assets directly to the School. First, you will receive an income tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the stock on the effective date of their gift. In addition, you avoid capital gains tax on the transfer. For more information, including an example of the benefits of making a gift of appreciated securities, visit Penn's Office of Gift Planning web page on Outright Gifts.

For transfer instructions, please contact Penn's Office of the Treasurer at (215) 898-7254 or at gifts@pobox.upenn.edu. This will help to ensure both timely receipt and appropriate allocation of the gift. To notify the Office of the Treasurer of your gift of securities, please complete the online form.
Planned Giving: Learn about the benefits of naming the School as a beneficiary of your will, retirement plan, life insurance policy, life income gift or other type of planned giving arrangement by visiting the Planned Giving web page.

For more information on how to support the School, please contact Kate Judge, Assistant Dean for Advancement and Alumni Relations, at (215) 898-1482 or at judge@vet.upenn.edu.
