4th - Show Jumping Day

CCI***
Jan
Byyny entered the Show Jumping phase of the Jersey Fresh CCI*** with Task Force
in first place, 9.1 faults ahead of Bonnie Mosser and Close The Deal, and with
Waterfront in second place, 4.6 faults ahead of Bonnie.
Jan
jumped early with Waterfront who turned in one of only two Show Jumping
double clears (Jonathan Holling rode the other with Direct Merger.). Jan was guaranteed
the win even before Task Force jumped. Waterfront also won the prize for the horse
that finished closest to the Optimum Time on the Cross Country. (Jan and Waterfront
are pictured at the right.)
Waterfront
was sent to the Holding Box at Sunday morning's Final Veterinary Examination.
Jan explained, "He hit (a square corner at) the Boathouse. He had a laceration
on the front of his right hind pastern. (Jan indicated with her fingers that it
was about two and a half inches long and about three quarters of an inch deep.)
We put staples in
it
last night and then took them out later as they were hurting him. After that he
lay down and rested. I think they (the veterinarians) just wanted to be sure it
wasn't on a joint. (They took him to holding to look at the cut carefully and
then passed him.)
Bonnie
and Close The Deal had one rail, at the last fence, for four faults with no time
faults and a final score of 75.5. Therefore Jan could be first and second if Task
Force could have two rails or less down. (Bonnie and Close The Deal are pictured
at the left above during the Victory Gallop.)
Task
Force rose to the occasion (no pun intended) had only one rail down to finish
first on 66.6 - appropriately tomorrow is 06-06-06; Waterfront was second with
a score of 66.9; and Close The Deal was third on 75.5. (Jan and Task Force's
picture appears in the Results Section at the end of this report.)
Jan
commented, "I think the sport (for me) is on a long steady course. I've been
waiting a long time for this. I don't know which is better this (winning Jersey
Fresh) or getting the Pink Coat. (The coat worn by American competitors
who officially represent the USEF in international competition.)
Jan
was asked if she was nervous when she had the rail with Task Force. She answered,
"Mental concentration is such a huge part of this sport. If you lose concentration,
you can lose a stride. I did not think about it."
"I
have two good horses and the support of Phillip (Dutton), and David and Karen
(O'Connor)."
Bonnie
was asked whether she had any hope of beating Jan in the Show Jumping. "Of
course," she answered. "Our horses were fit enough to keep a good rhythm
(in the Show Jumping)," Bonnie continued. "You could tell the earlier
horses were struggling."
Asked
why she had the last rail down, Bonnie answered, "I pulled, I sure wasn't
going to go for the flyer!"

(At
the Press Conference, Jan and Bonnie Toast each other

CCI**
Kate
Ditchey, of Unionville, Pennsylvania, who rides with Phillip Dutton and is finishing
her degree in Animal Sciences at the University of Delaware this summer, came
from third place after the Dressage to lead after the Cross Country. She and Belmont
turned in one of only five double clears in the Show jumping phase to finish on
a score of 49.6. (Kate and Belmont's picture appears in the Results Section
at the end of this report.)
Kate
said, "I walked the course once with Phillip and then twice on my own. If
I keep my hands down and leave him alone (things will go well). I don't consistently
Show Jump clean."
Wendy
Bebie and Phoenix, second after a double clear Cross Country run remained in second
place on a final score of 55.0. (Wendy and Phoenix are pictured at the right.)
Phillip
Dutton was third on Mrs Annie Jones' (the owner of The Foreman) and Shannon Stimson's
(the owner of Nova Top) Tru Luck. Phillip said of Tru Luck, "I bought him
last year from Amy Smith (a former student of Phillip's). She rode him at Radnor
as a six year old. Then he got an injury in the field. He's got the makings of
a very good horse. I was ve
ry
pleased with him all weekend. He'll be aiming for Fair Hill (the CCI***). I wouldn't
have had him totally fit for this." Phillip and Tru Luck are pictured
at the left.)
Regarding
his student Kate Ditchey's win, Phillip said, "I was very pleased. She is
a good hard working girl who wants to ride well. She got lost in Show Jumping
before. I am very pleased for her and proud of her!"
