TAKES HOME MAYBACH BARBURY CASTLE HORSE TRIALS TITLE Sunday 9 July
2006 Polly Stockton yesterday stamped her credentials as one of the
British team reserves for The World Championships, by taking home the CIC*** Maybach
International Horse Trials Trophy after
a quality clear cross country moved her up from third place after the Show Jumping.
Time penalties after hesitation at the start for Sharon Hunt (the leader
after the show jumping) and a stop cross country for Lucinda Fredericks
(lying second after the show jumping) put paid to their claims to this new Premier
League title. (Polly and Tom Quigley are pictured at the right. Photo Courtesy

the Rolex Kentucky CCI****, in April of this year.) The final top
4 on the leader board were as follows: 1. Polly Stockton (GBR), Tom
Quigley - 52.3 2. Daisy Dick (GBR), Spring Along - 60.6; 3.
Mary King (GBR), Cashel Bay - 62.4; 4. Andrew Hoy (AUS), Master
Monarch - 63.6 "I couldn't be happier with the way things have gone
and I had a number of top international riders come to me and say that it was
the best going that they had competed on in the world, in all 3 phases,"
commented Barbury's Competition Director, David Green. As one of
the leaders in The Premier League, Australia's Andrew Hoy now moves into
a clear lead with his fourth place at Barbury earning him 10 points, putting him
ahead of nearest rival, Andrew Nicholson.
After the completion
of the Novice Cross-Country, Competition Director David Green commented:
"The Captain (Mark Phillips - Course designer at Barbury) excelled
himself with this course and, in my opinion, has designed the best novice course
ever. I have never seen so many scared faces on riders at the beginning of a course,
only to see their confidence grow as they progressed around the course and then
finished with the broadest smiles ever. The fences were so well built and the
going so perfect, it was a dream for the Novice horses to experience. The course
created the perfect opportunity for horses to prepare themselves for the Novice
Championships at Gatcombe in August." * * * Amy
Tryon,
named to the US Three Day Squad for the WEG to be held in Aachen, Germany, in
August, asked to be allowed to compete at Barbury Castle
instead of the Mandatory Outing to be held at the Horse Park of New Jersey on
Tuesday, July 18th, because of the increased expense of shipping from the state
of Washington, where she lives, to attend the Virginia Training Session and the
New Jersey Mandatory Outing and then shipping to England. (Amy and Poggio are
pictured at the left jumping The Turtle in the Water at The Fork where they placed
7th on a score of 50.0, with 7.2 time faults on the Cross Country.) Poggio
scored 53.7 in the Dressage (below 10th place), added 4 faults Show Jumping and
35.6 time faults Cross Country, for a final score of 93.3 and 48th place from
79 finishers and 105 starters. Amy
and a syndicate have bought Le Samurai from Robyn Fisher. He also ran at Barbury
scoring 55.4 in the Dressage, one rail down Show Jumping, and 20 jumping faults
and 41.2 time faults Cross Country for a final score of 120.6 and 69th place.
