Saturday, July 8 - Cross Country Day

CIC***

Canada's Karl Slezak, from Tottenham, Ontario, does, indeed lead the CCI*** after the Cross Country phase. (Is Brian O' Connor EVER wrong? - please see below to understand this reference.) Riding Foxwood Spencer Karl picked up only 2 time faults Saturday for a two day score of 48.0. (Karl and Foxwood Spencer are pictured at the right below - the third picture down.)

Elisa Wallace, of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Jackson are in second place on 58.10, with 4 time faults Cross Country. This gives Slezak two rails and two time faults in hand for the Show Jumping phase. (Elisa and Jackson are pictured at the right jumping the corner in the first water, Nui Lua Wai.)

Loreen Kay, who lives in West Hills, California, rode her own horse Russian to third place on a score of 59.60, which included 10 time faults over the Ritch Temple designed Cross Country course. (Loreen and Russian are pictured at the left below jumping into the first water, Nui Lua Wai.)

The overnight leader Kelli Temple, who will ride for Canada at the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany, dropped to ninth place having picked up 22.8 time faults on the Cross Country. Surely she did not wish to leave her trip the the Games on the Cross Country course.

Donna Smith (NZL) and Call Me Clifton, second over night, fell victim to the dubious charms of the corner in the first water, Nui Lua Wai, where she incurrred a refusal to drop out of the top ten. Call Me Clifton jumped the obstacle well upon re-presentation.

* * * * *

The CIC*** competition ended at 2:00 PM. Your reporter waited until 4:20 PM for scores - NOTHING!!! Your reporter is sorry. Your reporter would like to know the results just as much as you would.

Brian O'Connor, announcer par excellence, said he thought that Canada's Karl Slezak might have been leading the CIC*** with Foxwood Spencer, In hopes that Brian is correct, and he usually is, here is a picture of Karl and Foxwood Spencer. (Karl and Foxwood Spencer are pictured at the right jumping into the First Water.)

Until the scores are available, dear readers, you will have to content yourselves with a couple of real "crash and burns" from the new water complex at Maui Jim.

Can you say Nui Lua Wai? This is supposed to mean big water in Hawaiian. Your reporter thinks it secretly means "Dive right in!" - or words to that effect.

(At the left, Kristin Schmolze and Surprise Party are about to 'dive right in' at the corner in the first water.)

(Vanessa Fenwick and Balista are also in for a thorough dousing in the grand tradition of 'dive right in!"

Editor's Note: Neither Kristin nor Vanessa, nor Surprise Party, nor Balista were injured in these falls.
