Saturday, October 14th - Cross Country Day

The one sentence explanation of the CCI** Cross Country day was curiously simple. "People either ran double clears, or retired, or did not start."

The most noteworthy retirement of the day was that of the overnight leader John Williams and Sweepea Dean. John had a who had a fall at 5C, when he and Sweepea Dean messed up the distance in the third part of the complex. Neither John nor his horse was hurt; but they retired aftor re-jumping the triple successfully.

This allowed the four combinations who were behind John in the Dressage to move up one slot each on the strength of double clear Cross Country runs.

Phillip Dutton and Lucky Stripe went from second to first on their Dressage score of 43.5. (Phillip and Lucky Stripe are pictured at the right jumping down the drop.)

Donna Smith and Rocket went from third to second, adding .4 of a fault for one second over the time and a score of 45.0. (Donna and Rocket are pictured at the left below jumping the corner in the ditch.)

Will Colemand and Kiki du Manoir went from fourth to third finishing on their Dressage score of 46.2.

Kim Severson and Tsunami moved up from fifth to fourth and finished on their Dressage score of 47.1. (Kim and Tsunami are pictured at the bottom left at the last fence on the Cross Country.)

Others who ran double clears for a total of thirteen were Kim Severson and Choo Choo Magoo; Susie Beale and Isabelle II; Sharon White and The King's Spirit; Krissy Smith and Clifton Vitori; Mikki Kuchta and Oz; Karen O'Connor and Let's Make a Deal; Erin Spohr and Corner Streeet; Karl Slezak and Rather Well; Sarah Kuhn and Only My Life; and Rebecca Simmons and Coltrane

Phillip commented about Lucky Stripe, "He jumped well. He is at the end of his two star career, so I was expecting him to jump well. It's not as if he's a green horse he's ready to move up. The course caused quite a bit of trouble; but, it's a championship course."

Asked about how Lucky Stripe might Show Jump on Sunday, Phillip answered, "He gets a little bit wound up." Then he was asked why that happened. Phillip gave one of his beautifully simplistic answers,"If I knew that, he wouldn't be wound up!"

Donna Smith, who had been at Friday's Pree Conference said that she was glad to be back. "The course took a lot of riding. It was an accuracy test. Horses had to stay accurate even when they were tired."

Regarding her round Donna said, "I started out fast, backed off in the middle, and went again at the end. Even though I was one second over, the time was very doable."

Will Coleman said of Kiki du Manoir, a Selle Francais/Thoroughbred cross, "In the beginning he was a little wiggly. After the first three or four minutes he felt like a real two star horse. The course was well presented and rewarded positive riding. (Will and Kiki du Manoir are pictured at the right jumping the skinny after the drop.)

After Cross Country, the two Preliminary Sections are being led by Gillian King and Kildonan Tug, (formerly the ride of Abigail Lufkin who has gone on to a more serious career as a Hollywood producer) and Susie Beale riding Petra. These two are daughter and mother. Because this is a highly unusual situation Brian O'Connor had them both comment on their Cross Country rides during the break between the Preliminary and the CCI**.

Kyle Carter's Gibson injured his stifle at the drop to skinny combination and was vanned away to the New Bolton Center Veterinary Hospital after a fifty minute hold on course.
