Southern Pines Horse Trials II

Show Jumping and Final Results
Sunday, March 21st

What a treat it was to be at the Southern Pines Horse Trials! The forsythia was in bloom and the daffodils ditto. The weather was fabulous for the first two days and adequate, though cloudy, on Sunday.

The competition was tight at the top in the A Section. Kim Severson and Tipperary Liadhnan had a fence in hand going into Show Jumping and that became two fences in hand when Becky Holder and Courageous Comet had one rail down in the stadium. Even two rails in hand was not sufficient as Tipperary Liadhnan managed to dislodge three of the colored poles to drop to second, having led through both Dressage and Cross Country. (That's why it's called a " Three Day Event"!)
(Becky and Courageous Comet are pictured at the right.)

Had either Phillip Dutton with Woodburn or Allison Springer on Arthur Show Jumped double clear they could have won; but, each has one rail down relegating them to third and fourth places.

It was not until eventual fifth place finisher Holly (Hepp) Hudspeth and Last Monarch that a double clear show jumping was chalked up.

10. Jessica Ruppel,

(24 competitors)

Advanced Section B:

The story was quite different in Section B. The top five competitors all jumped double clears. Perhaps something was learned from the problems incurred by those in the first section - or maybe Pawlow, Belmont II, The Foreman, Kheops du Quesnay and Shared Option are just better show jumpers.

1. Will Faudree, Pawlow - 34.60 (DCSJ) (Will and Pawlow are pictured at the right on the Cross Country.)
2. Kate Hicks, Belmont II - 36.50 (DCSJ)
3. Phillip Dutton, The Foreman - 37.10 (DCSJ)
4. Phillip Dutton, Kheops Du Quesnay - 40.90 (DCSJ)
5. Lillian Heard, Share Option - 42.70 (DCSJ)
6. Bonnie Mosser, Merloch 49.20 (8 faults SJ)
7. Peter Barry, Kilrodan Abbott - 50.30 (4 faults SJ)
8. Holly Payne, Madeline - 52.70 (DCSJ)
9. Ashley Kehoe, Mazetto - 59.90 (12 faults SJ)

10. Jennifer Simmons, GV Tuscany - 61.60 (4 faults SJ)
(25 competitors)
