Fair Hill International CCI*** Show Jumping

Karen O'Connor, riding Lourdes Peralt's Grand Slam, jumped one of only four double clears over Sally Ike's Show Jumping course to win The Fair Hill International CCI***. This is the second time Karen has won at Fair Hill. The first time was at the very first Fair Hill, in 1989, 14 years ago, with Mr. and Mr. Richard Thompson's Nos Ecus. (Karen and Grand Slam are pictured at right.)

Karen said of the course, "I love Sally Ike's courses. (Sally Ike is the Director of Show Jumping for the USET.) They ask all the questions. They require adjustability. You have to be able to land and turn quickly. The related distances are not given away."

The overnight leader Kristin Schmolze and Cavaldi had one rail down, but no time faults, to drop to second place on a score of 54.6, a mere 1.8 faults adrift of the leaders. Kristin's second place makes her the highest placed Young Rider ever at Fair Hill.

Kristin won the Markham Trophy for the Leading Young Rider. (Kristin and Cavaldi receiving the ribbon from Hugh Plumb, the son of J. Michael Plumb, rider of Markham, below left.) The trophy was presented by Hugh Plumb, son of multiple Olympic Team Medalist and Individual Silver Medalist at the Montreal Olympic Games, J. Michael Plumb. Mike rode Markham, who had to be put down when he threw a "van fit" in the plane, while flying to compete in the Tokyo Olympic Games, in 1964. The pilot felt that Markham was endangering the safety of the entire airplane.

Kristen said, of Cavaldi, "The bigger, the harder, the better! He's a great little jumper!"

Julie Richards and Hyde Park Corner remained in third position in spite of pulling one rail. Julie commented, "I am thrilled to be in the top three. I blame the rail on myself. I was a little bit careless there." (Julie and Hyde Park Corner are pictured at right below.)

Phillip Dutton, riding for Australia, placed fourth and won the Leading Foreign Rider Trophy with his and Mrs. Annie Jones' The Foreman.

The Final Leader Board looks like this:

1. Karen O'Connor, Grand Slam - 52.8
2. Kristin Schmolze, Cavaldi - 54.6
3. Julie Richards, Hyde Park Corner - 57.0
4. Phillip Dutton (AUS), The Foreman - 59.6
