About Us
Five Points Horse Trials, September 26 - 28

Sunday, September 28, Show Jumping

"The Cross Country here (at Five Points) was a good preparation for the Pan Am Games, especially the new water (with the skinny out), the double corners and the sunken road," stated Will Faudree, the winner of the Mandatory Outing for the Pan American Short List and Alternates. Will rode Antigua to a double clear Cross Country at the Fair Hill International CCI*** last fall, so he knows the course well. Since then Will and Antigua finished 12th at The Rolex-Kentucky CCI**** this spring. (Will and Antigua are pictured at right during the Mandatory Outing presentation at Five Points Horse Trials.)

"The terrain here (at the Carolina Horse Park) is not as severe as Fair Hill. We are using it as a good way to prepare a horse for Fair Hill."

Will, who is currently employed and sponsored by James W. Cogdell at The Fork, in Norwood, NC, and Antigua (40.4) turned in a double clear in the Show Jumping phase to win the Outing by 8.4 faults from Ashley MacVaugh* and All's Fair (48.8) who also jumped a double clear to move from 4th to 2nd place.

Ashley lives in Hamilton, MA, in the summer and winters in Southern Pines, keeping her horses at Bobby Costello's barn, when she's in North Carolina. All's Fair, an English bred, is eleven years old. Ashley has had him since he was seven. He had done Preliminary when she bought him. The pair worked their way up the ladder through the Bromont CCI** and the Fair Hill CCI***, to the Blenheim CCI***, in England, in the fall of 2002, where they finished 30th on a score of 81.61 with 14.4 time faults on Cross Country. This spring they finished 18th at the Kentucky CCI****, and landed on the Alternate List for the Pan Am Games. (Ashley and All's Fair are pictured above left in the Dressage Phase.)

Stephen Bradley, of Leesburg, VA, was on the USET's Team for the Barcelona Olympic Games, in 1992, where he and Sassy Reason finished the competition after two stops at a difficult water complex. The following year Steve and Sassy won the Burghley CCI****, in England. He and Brandenburg's Joshua finished in 3rd place in the Mandatory Outing, having picked up 7 time faults in the Show Jumping phase to drop from 2nd to 3rd. (Steve and Brandenburg's Joshua are pictured at right.)

Joshua belongs to Mr.William Lowe, of Alexandria, VA, who also owns Goldy's Law Firm, another ride of Steve's. Joshua is 8 years old. Last year he ran at the Foxhall CCI***. This year he prepped for Rolex with runs at Pine Top and at North Georgia, where he finished 4th in an Advanced Section. He was ridden there by Bruce Davidson because Steve had cracked his sternum in a fall. Joshua finished 14th at the Rolex-Kentucky CCI****, in April ridden by Steve.

Karen O'Connor finished 4th with Joker's Wild, moving up from 6th on the strength of a double clear Show Jumping, one of only five in the Outing.

Saturday, September 27th, Cross Country

After Cross Country, Will Faudree continues to lead the Mandatory Outing for the Short List and Alternates for the USET's team for the Pan American Games. Riding Antigua, Will collected 8 time faults, the second fastest trip around the course, for a final score of 40.4. (Will and Antigua are pictured at right jumping into the water.)

Steve Bradley moved up from 11th to second with Brandenburg's Joshua, on the strength of the fastest Cross Country run, a mere 4.4 faults, for 11 seconds over the time allowed. Joshua's score is 44.4, leaving Will and Antigua with exactly one fence in hand for Sunday's Show Jumping. (Steve and Brandenburg's Joshua are pictured below left jumping the log in the water.)

Holly Hepp and Lester Piggott added 12 time faults to their 5th place tie score of 36.0 after Dressage, for a total of 48.0 faults and 3rd place. (Holly and Lester Piggott are pictured center below jumping the skinny bounce out of the water.)

The other two who had been tied for 5th, Ashley MacVaugh and Jan Thompson, now stand 4th and 5th. Ashley and All's Fair picked up 12.8 time faults for 48.8, and 4th place, and Jan and Shared Dreams added 14.8 time faults for 50.8, and 5th place.

Darren Chiacchia didn't do himself and Windfall any favors, picking up 23.2 time faults, and this is not a horse who is inclined to improve at a Three Day Event. David O'Connor, who had been 9th with Courting Danger, had a glance off at the pair of corners and now stands 12th on 72.4. David's problems on course paled by those of Nathalie Bouckaert and West Farthing who also fell victim to the same corner as David and then had another run out at the skinny out of the water. It later transpired that Nathalie had jumped the wrong fence after her inital problem and was eliminated. How's that for a rotten day?

Other standings in the Mandatory Outing are:
6th - Karen O'Connor, Joker's Wild - 51.6 (17.2 time faults)
7th - Bobby Costello, Dallaince - 52.8 (13.2 time faults)

Friday, September 26, Dressage

Jessica Ransehousen, the USET's Vice President for Dressage judged the Mandatory Outing fo the Short List and Alternates for the Pan American Games, at the Five Points Horse Trials. After each ride, Ms. Ransehousen critiqued and discussed each competitor's ride with them.

Will Faudree, who rides with Phillip Dutton, in Pennsylvania, led after the Dressage Phase with Antigua. This pair had finished 12th at the Rolex-Kentucky CCI**** last spring. They had a forward and accurate test for a score of 32.4 just .4 of a fault ahead of perennial Dressage leaders Darren Chiacchia and Windfall. (Will and Antigua are pictured at right.)

Darren admitted that he had, "Opened the door," by missing a few key elements, including one flying change. Darren and Windfall had finished 2nd behind Faudree's mentor, Australia's Phillip Dutton, at the Foxhall CCI***. last April. (Darren and Windfall are pictured below left.)

Karen O'Connor, a multiple Olympic Team Medalist, stands 3rd riding Joker's Wild, the 7th place finisher at the Rolex-Kentucky CCI****. (Karen and Joker's Wild are pictured at right below.)

Jan Thompson, fresh from a top 20 finish at the Blenheim CCI***, in England, is in 4th position with the grey Shared Dreams.

The Dressage was held, for the first time on the south side of the road, the same side as the stabling and the Show Jumping, on a brand new sand "pad" large enough to hold 4 small Dressage rings and one large ring. It was a hot day - 87 degrees at 3:50 PM - and the new rings were dusty. Several people were heard to comment that they liked it better when it was held on grass. Certainly it would have been cooler for all concerned, competotors, horses, judges, and scribes had it been held on a grass surface.

Preview

Five Points Horse Trials, to be held at The Carolina Horse Park, near Southern Pines, SC, September 26 - 28 has much to offer.

The headliner will be the Pan American Games Mandatory Outing fo those on the Short List and some of the Alternates. Those entered from the Short List include:

Nathalie Bouckaert - Westfarthing - 3rd Foxhall Cup CCI*** (Nathalie and Wesrfarthing are pictured at right jumping off the island at the Foxhall Cup CCI***, in April.)

Steve Bradley - Brandenburg's Joshua - 14th Foxhall Cup CCI*** (Steve and Joshua are pictured below left jumping on to the island at the Foxhall Cup CCI***, in April.)

Darren Chiacchia - Windfall - 2nd, Foxhall Cup CCI***

Buck Davidson - Otto's Who - 10th Foxhall Cup CCI***

Will Faudree - Antigua - 12 Rolex Kentucky CCI****

David O'Connor - Courting Danger - 8th Bramham CCI*** (GBR) (David and Courting Danger are pictured below right Show Jumping at North Georgia last April.)

Karen O'
Connor - Joker's Wild - 7th Rolex Kentucky CCI****

Those entered from the Alternate List include:

Corinne Ashton - Dobbin - 6th Foxhall CCI***

Holly Hepp - Lester Piggott - 16th Rolex-Kentucky CCI****

Ashley MacVaugh - All's Fair - 18th Rolex Kentucky CCI****

Leigh Smith - High Cotton - 17th Rolex-Kentucky CCI****

Lynn Symansky - No It Tissant - 22nd Rolex-Kentucky CCIO****

Linden Wiesman - Esker Riada - 11th Foxhall Cup CCI***

(Placings are all from 2003.)

To be sure, several of those on the Short List chose to run at the Burghley Masterfoods CCI****, earlier this month in England. Among the defectors, who had the following Burghley placings, were: Steve Bradley and From (40th); William Coleman and Fox In Flight (26th); Karen O'Connor and Upstage (27th); Amy Tryon with Poggio II (18th) and Woodstock (DNF); Heidi White and Northern Spy (44th); and John Williams with Carrick (4th) and Sloopy (18th). Kim Severson would have run both Winsome Adante and Royal Venture at Burghley had they both not suffered colic operations which ended their 2003 campaigns. The trip to England was only truly the correct decision for those who finished in the top 20.

Those who chose to stay behind should form a competitive group for the Pan Am Games to be held at Fair Hill, MD, at the end of October.

Besides the Mandatory Outing for the Pan Am Games Short List, Five Points offers the De Broke Preliminary Championship, with 21 entries; the USEA Intermediate Championship, with 10 entries; and the East Coast Champion- ships at the Preliminary, Training and Novice levels.

Patron Sponsorships are available at $150.00 for the three days or at $75.00 for a single day.
