Southern
Pines Horse Trials, March 14-16, 2003
Final
Report on the Advanced Dovisions
Canadians
win two of the four Advanced Divisions and place second in a third.
In
Division 1, Linda Dahlgren and Cameo were in 9th place after the Dressage phase,
on a score of 40.42. They turned in a fault free jumping round on Cross Country,
in the fastest time of any competitor in the division and the second fastest in
the entire competition for .8 of a time fault for 2 seconds over the time allowed.
Linda and Cameo entered the Show Jumping with a cushion of 13.50 faults as Beale
Morris and Eastern Shore had already had a rail down in that phase. They used
up almost all of their cushion, accumulating 4 faults for one rail down and 7
time faults; but managed to eak out a victory by 2.50 faults on a score of 52.22.
Beale
and Eastern Shore had been tied for 6th after Dressage, added 12.8 time
faults
on Cross Country and the above mentioned 4 faults for a rail in Show Jumping to
finish on a score of 54.72. (Beale and Eastern Shore are pictured at right
jumping into the water.)
Phillip
Dutton riding Mrs. Annie Jones' Cayman Went won the Dressage (34.58), incurred
19.6 time faults for 49 seconds over time on Cross Country and had 1 time fault
in the Show Jumping for a final score of 55.18 and third place. Caroline Dowd,
from near by Carthage, NC, finished fourth only .19 of a fault adrift of the Australian
star.
Canada's
Bruce Mandeville and his Olympic veteran Larissa won the Dressage
on
a score of 30.83, in Advanced Division 2. They never looked back! The mare added
only 5.2 time faults on the Cross Country - the third fastest in their Division
behind Nina Fout on Nanki Doubleday's Wild Frontier, the only pair to make the
time at the entire competition, and Phillip Dutton on Mr. and Mrs. Roger Secrist's
Damien, who had just 4 time faults. Larissa jumped clean in the stadium to finish
on 36.03 to win the Division as well as the trophy for the best score of any Advanced
horse. ( Larissa and Bruce are pictured above left jumping out of the water.)
Adrienne
Iorio-Borden, who lives in Massachusetts, was second in Division 2 throughout
the competition, after Dressage, after Cross Country, and after a clean Show Jumping
to finish on 42.1. Phillip and Damien placed 3rd on 46.32 and local hero and Sydney
Olympian Bobby Costello with his Sydney mount Chevalier finished 4th on 51.13.
Canadians
continued to triumph as Stuart Black and Elkins Wetherill's Midnight Magic came
from a second place finish in the Dressage phase, to add only 6 time faults Cross
Country, and 4 faults for a rail down Show Jumping for a final score of 42.92.
(There is a picture of Stuart and Midnight Magic on Cross Country in an earlier
article in this series below.)
Kim
Severson rode Linda Wachmeister's Royal Venture, who was more than a
bit on the muscle in the Dressage phase, his first outing for 2003, to a tie for
8th place after that phase - one in which he usually exceeds. It was an uphill
battle from there on; but, only 6.8 time faults Cross Country, the second fastest
in the Division behind Larissa, vaulted them up to 2nd, a position they maintained
despite one rail in the stadium, to finish on a score of 48.72. (Royal Venture
and Kim are pictured at right.)
Buck
Davidson subbing for Graeme Thom on Ashdale Count finished 3rd, on 51.88 and Southern
Pines' Bobby Costello placed 4th with Dalliance, on 54.70.
Christy
Price and her veteran Grey Spirit II won the fourth Division of Advanced
by
placing 2nd in Dressage (27.92), adding 14.4 time faults on Cross Country to move
up to 1st place, and then defending that position by jumping a clear in the Show
Jumping. (Christy and Grey Spirit II are pictured at the left.)
Another
Canadian, Ian Roberts riding Mata-riki, tied for the fastest time of the Division
Cross Country with Phillip Dutton and Troy, each had 6.4 time faults for 16 seconds
over the time allowed. Roberts added 8 faults Show Jumping and finished on 51.48,
for 2nd place.
Gayle
Molander and Sir Nicholas won the Dressage, added 30.8 time faults on the Cross
Country and Show Jumped clean to finish 3rd on 53.3, while Dutton and Troy placed
4th on 58.48.

Report on the Intermediate Divisions

Eventing Association's Leading Lady Rider and Leading Rider for 2002 win Divisions
of Open Intermediate.

Severson, Leading Lady Rider in 2002, and Aces High Show Jumped clean to move
up from second to first place in Open Intermediate Division 1 on a score of 37.5.
Mara Depuy and
her own Nicki Henley, also jumped clean in the stadium to trail the winner by
a mere .6 of a fault, for second place. Mara seems completely recovered from the
broken leg which kept her from being able to ride at Radnor last fall. (Mara
and Nicki Henley are pictured at the right.)
John
Williams and Sloopy, the overnight leaders did not have such good luck, pulling
one rail to drop to third place on a score of 39.1.
In
Open Intermediate Division 2 Australia's Phillip Dutton, the USEA's Leading Rider
for 2002, on Mrs. Annie
Jones'
The Foreman had no Show Jumping faults to move up to first place on 37.4. (Phillip
and The Foreman are pictured at the left.) Kim Severson and Winsome Adante,
who had led after Cross Country, pulled three rails in the muddy going and dropped
to 7th place. Bobby Costello and Clover Market had no faults to take home the
red ribbon for second place.
The
Young Rider Open Intermediate Division was won by Hillary Moses and Madox. This
pair had been third after the Dressage Phase, moved into the lead with the fastest
Cross Country in t
he
Division, for only 5.6 time faults, and Show Jumped clean to retain their overnight
lead. (Hillary and Maddox are pictured at right jumping onto the island in
the water jump on Cross Country.)
Sara
Davis and Dexter Wong, who had won the Dressage Phase dropped to second after
Cross Country, with 12.4 time faults and were able to remain in second position,
in spite of pulling one rail in the stadium, for a total of 49.9 faults. Eleanor

American
Stars from the WEG and Olympics as well as Canadian and Australian International
Competitors rank High at Southern Pines.
Saturday,
March 15, 8:00 PM: The
weather, cold , raw and misty with early showers, was the subject of everyone's
conversations. The temperature never rose above 48 degrees. The course at Southern
Pines can handle a lot of water. That combined with careful applications of stone
dust by an experienced crew made the conditions extremely safe.
Both
Divisions of Open Intermediate are being led by members of the USET's
WEG
Gold Medal Winning Team from Jerez, Spain, 2002, after completion of the Cross
Country phase. John Williams, the highest placed American in Spain, leads Division
1 with Sloopy on a score of 35.80. (See photo of John and Sloopy at right.)
Kim
Severson, the second highest placed American at Jerez, rode Linda Wachmeister's
Winsome Adante, the very horse with whom she had the fastest time over the Cross
Country in Spain, to lead Division 2 of the OI. Southern Pines marked Winsome
Adante's 2003 season debut. Dan's score is 36.0. (See picture of Kim And Winsome
Adante at left.)
Kim
is also second in Division 1 with Ace's High, just 1.70 faults adrift of her WEG
teammate. Mara Depuy is in third place in Division 1 with her own Nicki Henley,
last year's winner of the Radnor CCI**, when ridden by David O'Connor. Mara is
fully recovered from the broken leg which caused her to miss Radnor last fall.
Australia's
highest placed rider from the WEG, Phillip Dutton, is in second place in Division
2, with Mrs. Annie Jones' The Foreman, 1.46 faults behind Kim and Dan. Sally Cousins
is in third place with Weltom Tangle. Hillary Moses and Madox lead the Young Riders
OI.
Linda
Dahlgren leads Advanced Division 1 with Cameo, who came from 9th after Dressage
for a score of 41.22, from Beale Morris and Eastern Shore (50.77) and Buck Davidson,
of Unionville, PA and Hyperlite (51.5).
Canada's
Bruce Mandeville continues to lead Advanced Division 2 with his Olympic veteran
mare Larissa, on 36.03. Phillip Dutton, for Australia, with Mr. and Mrs. Roger
Secrist's Damien is second, on 37.42. Mr Secrist is instrumental in success of
the Horse Park and responsible for idea of the live Web coverage of Southern Pines
Horse Trials available on the Horse Trials site.(Please see Web Site address
below.) Home town hero Bobby Costello and his Sydney Olympic mount Chevalier
are in third, with a score of 44.13.
Stuart
Black, also a Canadian, is in the lead in Division 3 with Midnight Magic,
on 38.92. (See photo of Stuart and Midnight Magic at right.)
He leads Kim Severson on Linda Wachmeister's Royal Venture (44.72) who came from
a tie for 9th to second on the strength of a mere 6.8 time faults. Southern Pines
is Royal Venture's first 2003 outing. Bobby Costello is also third in this Division,
this time with Dalliance (50.70).
Christy
Price and Grey Spirit II, with a score of 42.32, lead Division 4 of Advanced from
Canada's Ian Roberts and Mata-riki (42.32) and Phillip Dutton and Troy (50.98).

rain was falling by 6:00 Pm and is forcast to continue into Sunday for the Preliminary
Cross Country and Intermediate and Advanced Show Jumping.

Former
Olympians and Southern Pines Residents Are Among Leaders after the Dressage Phase.
Friday,

first and third at the CIC-W***, at Red Hills, in Florida, last weekend, leads
Advanced 1 with Mrs. Annie Jones' Cayman Went on 34.58. Adrienne Iorio-Borden
and Show of Heart, a former ride of Phillip's, are tied for second with Jessica

Carrick are pictured at right.) Carrick's test was exceptionally fluid, and
a pleasure to watch. Canadian Stuart Black is in second place with Midnight Magic
on 32.9. Buck Davidson of Unionville, PA, who rode Graeme Thom's Ashdale Count,
and Australia's Phillip Dutton, who resides in West Grove, PA, are tied for third
with identical scores of 37.08.

Division 4 is led by Marylander Gayle Molander and Sir Nicholas, with the best
Dressage score of all - 22.56. (Sir Nicholas and Gayle are pictured below left.)
Christy Price and Grey Spirit II are
second
on 27.92, while Shannon Ewing and Moment's Notice stand third with a score of
28.33.
An
over night thunder storm Thursday signalled the passage of a cold front, which
led to chilly temperatures and brisk winds. The forcast for Saturday, Cross Country
Day for the Intermediate and Advanced horses, has not beencheerful. Though Southern
Pines' sandy soil handles moisture extremely well, hopes are high for a dry Saturday.
